Did Jesus laugh? Everything good comes from God so I believe that God has a wicked sense of humor. Well, maybe not WICKED—but definitely GREAT! Here’s some proof.
Consider Nick, nicknamed Cola—Russian name Nicolai. The first thing the orphanage director said about Nick when she placed him in my arms at nineteen months of age was, “Cola makes me laugh!”
He still makes us laugh at 14. Just like the carbonated cola drink, Nick is effervescent. Every day, he finds something entertaining about life and freely shares his glee. Like today after dinner. He found some random piece of green cardboard lying on the kitchen counter and casually placed it on his head as he reached for a handful of grapes.
“I am King of the Grapes!” he announced with dramatic flair and fake bass voice.
Then he proceeded to take two green grapes and turn them into eyeballs. From there, one rolled onto a protruding lower lip. Thankfully, my camera was close. Though laughing hard, I managed to steady my hands to snap a few shots.
Flashback two weekends. While skiing in the Upper Peninsula, Nick and I went shopping because he’s in that adolescent growth spurt and needed new—everything. Even ski gloves didn’t fit from last year! How did this happen without me noticing that he’s been blown up like a balloon? Fortunately, he’s a great shopper. He knows what he likes, he looks for sales, and he actually has great taste. He can match colors and I don’t mean just by color. You know how sometimes two greens can clash? Wait till you see the outfit he picked from different racks—hat and all—for 50% off everything! I’m a happy mama—and a belly-laughing one to boot!
“Could you have picked something a bit brighter and more noticeable?” I asked, laughing out loud.
“It’s good to be seen on the slopes.” he responded matter-of-factly with one of those Justin Bieber hand signals I just don’t get.
Was that a double entendre? Knowing him, probably not—but I laughed hard thinking about it.
I laughed.
Does God laugh at just how cute and fun and funny we are?
I say—YES!
He delights in His children just like we delight in ours. And when Nick sees how I delight in him, he is delighted. And aren’t we delighted when we see our children delighted?
A circle of joy is drawn with laughter.
Have you thought recently about how delightful you are? How you do random, adorable things that make God smile? How you say and do some crazy, funny things that make God laugh out loud?
Next time we randomly say or do something funny—even if it’s stupid—can we laugh out loud with God and draw a new circle of joy?
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy. Job 8:21
The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:15
